When it comes to activity, the more the merrier

When it comes to activity, the more the merrier

Whether you ski, practice yoga or walk, sharing your commitment to being active and healthy is a great way to show you care — for your partner, children, other family members, coworkers, neighbours and religious or community groups.

There are many ways that you can influence others and make positive changes.

  • Organize a bicycle ride for your neighbours through the streets and paths of your community. You’ll get to know your area — and each other — while being active.
  • Challenge your coworkers to take 10,000 steps a day. Track everyone’s progress over a set period of time, and arrange for a prize such as an MP3 player or even a “free” vacation day, as an incentive.
  • Inspire a friend by sharing the positive changes you’ve experienced with your own fitness routine. Your enthusiasm is contagious.
  • Entice your spouse to exercise with you, even if it means changing your activities to accommodate his or her interests.
  • Involve your family in active leisure pursuits such as weekend hikes and visits to activity parks.
  • Teach a friend how to play badminton or tennis, so you have a willing partner to play with.
  • Coach a soccer team or lead an after-school fitness class. With cutbacks in schools, your volunteer time may be a welcome contribution.
  • Encourage a colleague who’s just getting started to keep at it. Beginning a new activity or program is hard — but your positive feedback can help him or her stick with it.

Don’t forget that simply by being active yourself you are teaching others that activity is both importantandfun through your good example. Your commitment sends a clear message to those around you that getting frequent exercise is a high priority for a heart healthy life.
