Get inspired by top athletes

The eyes of the world turn to Western Canada this month. What a great opportunity to become inspired to be more active this winter!

Try it — or something like it

Skiing and ski-related activities are prominent this time of year. Not surprising, since there are so many variations, like Nordic (cross-country), alpine (downhill) and snowboarding; both racing and freestyle.

Whether you chase speed or prefer slowing down to hear the wind whisper through the pines, skiing and boarding offer outdoor exercise for every taste and every skill level. Many alpine resorts also offer adaptive programs for people with disabilities. And since we have some of the best mountain resorts in the world, why not get out there and use them.

Make it yours

Snowboarding, which only started gaining popularity in the 1960s, is a relative newcomer to winter sports. The earliest marketed snowboarding device was called the "snurfer" and sold as a novelty item for children. Back-country adventurers and surf and skateboard enthusiasts took the fledgling sport to new competitive heights.

The lesson here? Find an activity you enjoy, and tailor it to your own needs, goals and abilities.

Not all or nothing

World-class athletes make their events look effortless. Alas, they're not — but that shouldn't stop you from participating.

Love watching fast sled events? Take your kids tobogganing in the park. Does seeing a top women's hockey team remind you of how much you miss high school sports? Help coach your daughter's team, or join a local league yourself.

Defining moments

If you're a sports fan you know that whatever the sport, there are moments when it all comes together — the perfect jump, the speedy slalom, the winning goal. We recognize athletes for a job well done, and you should acknowledge your triumphs too.

Maybe that means doing three more sit-ups than you could last week. Or you finally master that complicated move in dance class. Or maybe you simply got up a half-hour earlier so you could start going to the gym again. Pause and enjoy the moment. And give yourself a mental medal.

Reaching the zone

Athletes excel not by luck but by practice. If you're not exercising as often as you would like, try making a commitment to add just one more workout each week. After a few weeks, you'll see what a difference it makes to your health and well-being.
